We have some very exciting news here at Solid. We just moved into a 7,000 square foot art storage facility in Los Angeles so we’re ready to take care of your art collection.  Remember that we also install, pack and ship art as well as fabricate crates and pedestals….Please get in touch for a quote!

In the meantime we’ll be shining a spotlight on some local LA artists and galleries in each newsletter.

Solid Artist Spotlight:

Mike Chattem

Tell us about your studio practice.

I make paintings that freely alternate between the boundaries of wall work and sculpture. Working with a combo of industrial materials and traditional media, I build chunky composites of maquette style landscapes and dimensional painting gestures. My work explores the phenomenological potential of painting through hyper tactility and sometimes kinetic elements.

Having lived in the East Coast, Midwest and West Coast, I feel a broad sentiment to the American condition. My practice is sort of like a subversive celebration of a new Americana. Regional tropes, polished consumerism and material exploration are frequent themes; all approached with a playful freedom and humor, regardless of how mundane or terrifying.

Do you have any shows coming up?

I’m excited to say I’ll have two pieces in Baker’s Dozen, opening May 27 at the Torrance Art Museum. The show will survey thirteen artists working in Southern California and I’ll be among a stellar roster. I’ll also be included in a group show at Hashimoto Contemporary opening in LA this summer.

What do you listen to in the studio?

I split my time between music and podcasts. I’ve been listening to a lot of Tropical Fuck Storm, Sun City Girls, Xiu Xiu and King Gizzard for music. Mostly comedy for pods. I love Stavros Halkias, Shane Gillis/Matt McCusker and Tim Dillon.

Tell us about your first experience making art.

My first experience making art was probably filling stacks of papers with drawings as a kid in preschool. It’s always felt natural but I didn’t realize you could shape your life around it until much later.

What projects do you have coming up?

I just curated the show Weird Flowers at Curve Line Space in Cypress Park. It’s a banger group show featuring 26 LA-based artists and will be up until June 17. And I’m currently working on my first cast bronze work with David Maxwell of Art Alerts. We should have a limited edition available sometime this Fall.

Who are your favorite local LA artists?

Oh, man, too many to list. From the canon Paul McCarthy, Jim Shaw, Chris Burden and Mark Bradford. As for contemporaries, I’m loving the work of Jess Goehring, Lee Piechocki, Trent Christensen, Ryan Crudgington, Tom Wixo, Sarah Bereza, Ian Patrick Cato and Mario Ayala. And most recently I was blown away by Max Hooper Schneider’s presentation at François Ghebaly. The talent in this city is off the charts and it’s such an inspiration to live among it.

What are your three favorite books?

  • Fortress of Solitude by Jonathan Lethem

  • Tropic of Cancer by Henry Miller

  • Moby Dick by Herman Melville

What are your three favorite movies?

  • The Holy Mountain

  • Fantastic Planet

  • Silence of the Lambs

Who are your three favorite artists?

  • Peter Saul

  • John Zorn

  • Jim Shaw
