Solid Artist Spotlight: Cheyann Washington
Bio
Cheyann Washington is a painter from Los Angeles, California. Represented by Wonzimer Gallery Since 2022 - Current, Washington's personal studies encapsulate the essence of human behavior and the figure as it mirrors nature. This conversation has been developed through numerous techniques and practices including drawing & painting. Her most recent series of natural pigments works on silk depict the nurturing bond within the environment created. This process extends her studies into biology and natural medicines such as ethnobotany and personal studies which examine her own body & emotions. The evolution of Washington's work connects us back to the ultimate understanding of this system in which both imbalance and balance live within us.
Tell us about your studio practice.
Going foraging for elements like rocks, clay, soil, metals, seeds, bark, shells & bones. The amount I'm able to source limits the amount being used. Through different forms of extraction I'm able to produce my own textures and shades. Once the pigments are ready I begin to evaluate mediums, binders that I'll be working on next.
Yes, this process takes much longer to get from point A - Z but there's something greater happening within my work when I'm completely involved in their evolving cycles. I feel more connected with this primal process.
Currently my studio practice has been slowed down due to the nature of my materials. When approaching a project I have to dedicate 1 - 2 weeks building my palette this process really demands my complete attention and presents.
Do you have any shows coming up?
~ Sometimes A Wind Blows, Dec 6th - Jan 10th @ Wonzimer Gallery, East LA
~ Black in Place, Jan 24th - Mar 22nd @ Angels Gate, San Pedro
~ *Solo Show, Feb 21st - Mar 14th @ Wonzimer Gallery, East LA
What do you listen to in the studio?
Audiobooks, background noise like ocean & whale sounds, NTS helps when I don't have any idea what to listen to. Music is tricky sometimes, especially with many lyrics & mood shifts. Silence is also nice with the sounds of my studio, the beating of my mortar and pestle
What projects do you have coming up?
I've been in Collaboration with a ceramist for several months now. We found each other at Snail Farms Art Mart on a weekend. Sarita saw a few cups I repurposed with figures. Afterwards we’ve stayed in connection sharing ideas. She would start with a simple shape like a cup or a slab of clay then pass it on to me to add figures and paint. Over the past few years I've been working with Earth pigments using rocks, soil, clay & rust sediment. There was always one element I felt was missing in my experimentation that was “Fire” I brought my curiosity to the table and we soon started testing slabs using the minerals I've sources.
